Choosing Your Software Developer

How do you choose the best software developer?

All software development companies are different. And that’s great! It means you can find one with the approach, process and communication style that fits you best.

There are a million variables, but I tried to cover some common ones and future videos will go over even more.

If you have a question or an area you’d like to see me address, let me know! We’ve been doing this for a long time, since 1999, and helping people get the answers they need is a passion of mine.

Is Your Software Built The Way You Need?

Can i-Tul build the software I need?

Can my dream come to life?

My business needs are really unique, can software be adjustable enough?

I’m not technical, can I still get what I need?

These are some of the most common questions I get. And Yes! It IS possible.

Custom software is built to work exactly the way you need. Custom apps are great when your needs are specific, unique or you have lots of corner cases. Each step is built to your business requirements, the screens are designed for your team, the fields are created to support your business. Stop trying to fit into someone else’s solution and build the exact software you want and need.

Start Where You Are

Want better software but aren’t sure where to start? Afraid you don’t know enough to even have the conversation? Heard from others that you need all the details worked out? Do you need to be a techie to hire a good developer?

The answer is that by hiring a full-service full stack development company, like I-Tul, that you can start wherever you are.  We help clients take the bud of an idea and turn it into a full vision and then we bring that vision to life.

At I-Tul, we create the architecture – all the pieces and features and functions that come together into a cohesive piece of system.  Often, clients only start with a vaguest idea of what they want.  They know the problems, they know what needs to happen but they don’t know how to get from here to there.

We start with discovery. Through discovery process, we’ll talk about the business needs, what exists, problems & bottlenecks, compliance and security, and, most importantly, the vision.  The vision is what finished looks like, what success means to you.

Once we understand the full picture, we can design a system that will use the best of what exists and create new software to fix the problems. Sometimes, the entire system is built from scratch.  Other times, we are filling in niches within a production system.    The goal is to build the infrastructure needed to fulfill your vision.

Some developers and freelancers prefer working with a complete spec (project specification).  They want to have the blueprint before they even quote a project.  Or, they will charge you to create the project scope. They want you to do the leg work before they get involved.

I’ve had clients come from that kind of relationship and share their frustrations.  The client always felt that they had to tell the developers how to build what was needed.  That the client had to know databases, languages or technology to even ask a question.  This is exactly why we don’t work that way.

Not having to create a full project spec or micromanage the development process is the benefit of working with a full-service company.  I-Tul will create the project scope and internally assign resources (designers, front-end developers, back-end developers, dev-ops, etc…).  We will also build the IT infrastructure to support what is needed (servers, VPNs, security, email, VOIP and other tech tools).   It is our job to know what is needed.

So, wherever you are in the planning process, we are here to help.  Whether you want to brainstorm what is possible, are planning for next year and want to talk budgets, or you have wireframes or an outline, we can meet you where you are.  Let’s start the conversation and work together to bring the new vision to life.

Roseville: Why We Love Being Here

I started I-Tul in Roseville, California, and am proud to still be based here. We love Roseville because of its thriving chamber, thoughtful leadership, and wonderful city services and amenities.

One of the first things I did when starting I-Tul was to join the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce. Over the past 20 years, I’ve served as an ambassador, sat on several committees, and attended countless lunches and mixers. The chamber has brought together the business community to represent us in government, connect us, and support the entire community.

I am also proud to be part of the 2019-2020 class of Leadership Roseville. Leadership is a yearlong program that introduces us to local leaders, educates us on city, county, and regional government, and promotes leadership. We’ve welcomed presentations from city and county leaders, including William Jessup University, Greater Sacramento Economic Council, Lake Tahoe Film Office, local Sheriff, Fire and Police departments, and more.

Whether the topic is budgeting, business development, security, future plans, or balancing conflicting needs, the program tackles it all. I am continuously impressed by the program’s professionalism, dedication, cooperation, and community support. This program has deepened my appreciation for local government and given me more reasons to be proud to be a Roseville, California resident and business owner.

Placer County California is a large and diverse community that tracks along Interstate 80 from Roseville to Truckee. We have two beautiful lakes: Folsom Lake and, most importantly, Lake Tahoe. The Tahoe area is beautiful and offers a wonderful variety of recreation.  My personal favorite spots are Squaw Valley, especially the Village and High Camp, Sunnyside, and the Resort at Squaw Valley.

We Are Roseville
#WeAreRoseville

Wanderlust holds their annual yoga festival there every year, and I’ve been blessed to attend several times.  Staying under the pine trees and learning from amazing teachers like Seane Corn is truly a gift. Every time I attend, I come back renewed and rejuvenated – and it helps that the village is only 1.5 hours from Roseville.

The local South Placer region, including Lincoln, Rocklin, Granite Bay, and Loomis is thriving.  We have the regional mall, Westfield Galleria at Roseville, Automall, and wonderful shopping options. My favorite is the Fountains at Roseville – who doesn’t love Mikuni Kaizen’s Tuna Sliders #2?

For the last 20 years, I-Tul has called Roseville, California home – and we intend to stay here for a very long time.

1 to 1,000 hours: It’s all code to us

At I-Tul, we provide a variety of services. We create simple marketing sites, themed sites, custom sites, standard ecommerce, complex ecommerce, integrations, API, mobile apps, custom software, line of business, Software as a Service (SaaS), intranets, client portals, plug-ins, landing pages, CRMs, and more, including support for all of them.

Does that seem like a lot? It is – but we can handle it!

Customized for your needs

Whether we are working on a marketing website or custom estimating system, our team is designing, developing, planning and executing. Every project uses the same core skill set. However, we understand that some projects require more. This could mean more help with planning, intricate designs, complicated programming, understanding business processes, third-party integrations, multi-layered hosting configurations, or detailed testing. All projects in our wheelhouse are combinations of the same talents, so customizing your project is easy to tackle.

Whether you need us for 1 hour or 10,000 hours, we are here to help you build great things.

Monthly Plans

Our monthly service plans start at 1 hour per month, and they can go up to 40+ hours per week. For example, if a business has regular updates to their WordPress site, our support team is on-call to help add new content, manage plug-ins, create new graphics, build new features and complete integrations. For clients with several websites or complex online tools, we scale the time needed to best match robust support needs.

Websites at Scale

Additionally, we offer our dedicated team plan for larger PHP software and infrastructure projects and on-going support. This plan includes weekly (or more) meetings to set priorities, track progress and keep communications transparent and open. Meeting regularly to talk through UI/UX, functionality, security, and growth plans helps everybody stay on target and prevents projects from falling through the cracks.

Sized to Your Needs

Don’t worry that your project is too small or too big for I-Tul. With our on-call support team, we are set up to be successful on quick projects. With a team of 17, we have the size and scale to take on larger projects and companies looking to expand their PHP and Laravel development teams.

Why do we offer such a variety of services? It’s all code to us. We are ready to step up and help in the ways you need us to.

Infrastructure – The Backbone

Building successful software infrastructure requires detailed strategy and planning. If you build the best infrastructure for your company, then all of the parts work together like a well-oiled machine.

So, how do you create a successful technical infrastructure?

Nowadays, you can choose from off-the-shelf systems, monthly subscriptions, and custom development. While it might be tempting to purchase an “off the shelf” system, we believe custom development is the best option when your needs are unique. You get exactly what you need – and nothing more. Here is how we can help you create a custom infrastructure for your business!

Step #1: Define the processes your company needs to run smoothly.

Defining processes involves thinking through every business process: How do leads come in? Who/what manages customer information? How are quotes created? How do we track fulfillment? Who/what manages accounts payable? Do we want to automate follow-throughs? What happens from the first contact or after the first year?

Our goal is to capture your specific business needs. Instead of buying a “one size fits all” system, you can create an infrastructure that does exactly what you need.

Step #2: Choose the main parts for each process or function.

Next, you choose the main parts of your infrastructure so we can create the best solutions for your needs. Start by choosing the most important aspects of your business. For example, some businesses focus on the sales/lead process, so they’ll need marketing automation and CRM. Another business might focus on project management, so they’ll need project management solutions.

Many businesses will have several processes or functions – and that’s great! The goal then is to find solutions that work together. For example, you may need CRM software and an accounting system that supports special payment options. The goal will be to gracefully migrate customers from the CRM into the accounting software.

Step #3: Implement your new system and make changes as needed.

Once you have a finished infrastructure, it’s time to make sure that each system is optimized, systems are fully integrated, and processes flow seamlessly. Once you implement your new system, we will work with you to make changes or add/drop services as needed.

Let’s say you chose a process that shares a login system to prevent juggling too many usernames and passwords. However, after you implemented the system, you realized you wanted to check that self-hosted systems were on the appropriate servers. You also wanted to ensure these systems had security, back-ups, and update plans in place. We’ll work with you to add in those features and ensure everything runs smoothly.

Does all of this sound overwhelming? No worries! We can help clients with custom software, integrations, and hosting/support planning. We also have a network of people we can recommend to help with desktops and servers, process planning, and strategy.

PHP

At I-Tul we work primarily with PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor). We build interactive and dynamic web-based software solutions using the latest tools that offer the most benefits for your company’s needs.

What is PHP?

PHP is an elegant language that is optimized for cloud-based applications, making it the most widely used server-side programming language. Since it was created for back-end web development, PHP is an ideal choice for many different kinds of business applications.

PHP is open source, which means it’s free to use and is maintained regularly by its own community. It works on platforms like Linux, Windows, Mac and leverages MySQL, Nginx, and Apache as part of the “LAMP”, “MAMP” or remote origin stack to allow the creation of dynamic content for your websites and web applications.

Laravel is currently our main programming framework, but we also use a custom framework and a few others when needed.

We build our marketing sites in WordPress, a PHP based platform, that is the industry leader.  The power, flexibility and control are the top reasons we standardized on WordPress in 2009. We also love the thousands of plug-ins available to expand functionality.

Why Use PHP?

Here are just a few key benefits to investing in PHP for your company’s software solutions:

It’s Flexible & Versatile
We like using PHP solutions like Laravel because they run well on a variety of platforms, such as Windows, Linux, Solaris, and UNIX.  The worldwide online community keeps the language and add-ins alive, robust, and up to date; All while allowing you to render HTML and JavaScript components seamlessly!

It’s Easy to Learn
PHP’s language is incredibly easy to learn, even for new users. The syntax and core are based on C, which means you won’t have to invest extra time and money into training, manuals, or workshops. If your web developer is already familiar with C, they can easily pick up PHP!

PHP is well documented. That makes is easy for programmers to maximize their knowledge to build the best solutions.

It’s Fast
PHP runs incredibly fast compared to comparable languages like RUBY and C# because it is not weighted down by superfluous libraries, saving your development team a lot of time building and maintaining your sites and applications. It is not only built to connect to databases quickly but maintain those connections so as to expedite data extraction, which makes sites load substantially faster – even if users are working with slower internet connections. This is a huge benefit for sites that require flawless database management and faster load times, like ecommerce sites.

It’s Cost Effective
Since PHP is open source, it doesn’t have inherent licensing fees, making it a great option for small businesses on a budget. For example, the local “LAMP” or “MAMP” stack is a combination of open source software that allows businesses to create powerful programs without maintaining costly third-party licenses.

If you want to learn more about how we integrate PHP and Laravel into our software solutions, let us know and we’ll be happy to help!
